A Preview of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey by Marvel Comics

Northanger Abbey #1 Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics is adapting Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey into a 5 book limited comic book series adapted by Nancy Butler, illustrated by Janet Lee, with a cover design by Julian Totino Tedesco. We love the intensity of heroine in the making Catherine Morland on the cover and hope that the interior images are as equally stunning. Here is a brief preview for your enjoyment.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Lovingly adapted from Jane Austen’s most humorous work, Marvel Comics is proud to present literature lover Catherine Morland’s quest to be the leading lady of her own great romance. Can real life prove the equal of the Gothic novels she finds so enchanting? Can Catherine find true love amid the fictions of others and her own wild imagination? And what dread secrets lie in wait in Northanger Abbey itself? Award-winning author Nancy Butler continues her quest to reinvent Jane Austen’s Regency world in the Mighty Marvel Manner. With exquisite illustrations from Janet Lee, 19th-century England comes alive like never before. Discover – along with Catherine Moreland – that while truth may not be stranger than fiction, it can be no less surprising!

  1. I’m still just adjusting to the fact that Jane Austen is in comic book format. I can see the comparison- loved Annette btw.

    Thanks for the post!

  2. When I envision Catherine Morland I see Actress Felicity Jones (NA2) in my mind. In a circular way I see some of her and her hair styles from that film version in these cartoons. Do you suppose the inspiration came from that movie? Looks plausible to me.

On a side-note, has anyone seen the amazing cartoons by Sonny Liew in Marvel Comic’s Sense and Sensibility? Talk about some talent!

  3. K in all seriousness I saw the first pic and I was like….humm ok this isn’t too bad but I knew there was something just not right about the pic but yet couldn’t put my finger on exactly WHAT was bothering me and keeping me from LOVING it…. you nailed it…..the beehive hairdo is bugging me!!! BAD!!

  4. Hahahaha, that is a pretty remarkable resemblance! I wonder what the illustrator had in mind at the time. I do have to say that I enjoy the graphic novel/comic versions of Jane Austen’s novels so far. They really bring a fresh new approach to Austen. They may not be to everyone’s taste though.
