The Darcy Brothers Virtual Book Launch Party with Authors, Monica Fairview, Maria Grace, Cassandra Grafton, Susan Mason-Milks and Abigail Reynolds

The Darcy Brothers by Monica Fairview, Maria Grace, Cassandra Grafton, Susan Mason-Milks and Abigail Reynolds We are very pleased to welcome Monica Fairview, Maria Grace, Cassandra Grafton, Susan Mason-Milks and Abigail Reynolds to Austenprose for the official virtual book launch party of their new novel The Darcy Brothers, released today by White Soup Press.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, The Darcy Brothers is an original variation based on Austen’s classic in which Mr. Darcy has a charming younger brother named Theo who meets Elizabeth Bennet and vies for her affections. Written by five Austenesque authors, you may well ask, as we did ourselves, how they could pool their talents and create one novel together? Abigail Reynolds has kindly supplied a revealing guest blog to share the experience with you. And, any  celebration would not be complete without gifts. Please enter a chance to win one of the four fabulous prizes being offered by their publisher by leaving a comment. The giveaway details are listed at the end of this post. Good luck to all!

DESCRIPTION (from the publisher)

Easy-going Theophilus Darcy is the opposite of his controlled older brother. Where Fitzwilliam Darcy is proud and awkward among strangers, Theo is a charmer. Fitzwilliam took his studies seriously, while Theo was sent down from Oxford for his pranks. Still, the brothers were the best of friends until tragedy and George Wickham tore them apart.

What if Theo were to meet Miss Elizabeth Bennet? Would he charm the young lady’s stockings off… or would he help his brother win her hand? Find out as the two brothers lock horns in this unique Pride & Prejudice variation collectively written by five respected authors.

The Darcy Brothers was first conceived as an interactive group writing project and has developed into a full-length novel featuring the charismatic Theo Darcy.

What’s even better than writing a book? Writing a book with other authors, of course! Group writing projects can be stimulating experiences which can push your writing to a new level, so when I had the chance to join a small group of writers I respected in writing a Pride & Prejudice variation novel, I jumped at it.

My partners were Monica Fairview, author of Mr. Darcy’s Pledge, Cassandra Grafton, author of A Fair Prospect, Maria Grace, author of the Given Good Principles series, and Susan Mason-Milks, author of Mr. Darcy’s Proposal. We had all participated earlier in a much larger group story, a P&P variation where Elizabeth Bennet had a brother, so when we started brainstorming for our new small group project, the next step was obvious – a  story where Darcy had a brother.

I don’t remember who came up with the idea first, but we knew right away it was the right one. The emails started flying fast and furious as we tossed around ideas. Eventually we landed on the idea of Theo Darcy, two years younger than his brother Fitzwilliam and his opposite in many ways. Theo charms everyone while Darcy is always giving offense. Theo is sociable, witty, playful and full of interesting conversation, with a dry sense of humor. Everyone likes Theo – except his brother. And there’s nothing Theo likes better than poking a little fun of his oh-so-serious elder brother!

But now we had a problem. A big one. We’d created a great character, but also one who happened to be just what Elizabeth Bennet thought she wanted in a man. What was going to happen when they meet? We all know Elizabeth dislikes Darcy in the first half of Pride & Prejudice. What would happen if she started falling in love with his younger brother…and her feelings were returned? Would Darcy try to stop the match, or would he stand back to allow Elizabeth happiness?

Then it got really complicated, because it turns out there are long-standing problems between the two brothers. Remember George Wickham (and who could forget him)? When Darcy went off to school and lost interest in Wickham and his hi-jinks, there was another boy for Wickham to attach himself to, a younger, more impressionable boy – Theo.

Needless to say, our dear Mr. Darcy does not react well to this! Especially when Theo decides to follow in Wickham’s footsteps and ‘study’ law. As we all know, Darcy is very good at jumping to conclusions, and not letting little things like evidence get in the way of his prejudices! Add to this a deep, dark secret which the brothers are determined never to discuss, and you have the recipe for deep rift between the brothers.

By the time we were half-way through the book, we’d half-forgotten the original Darcy didn’t have a brother. Adding Theo to the mix let us explore so many different sides of Darcy, and the contrast between them added focus to the characters. When writing our own stories, we kept forgetting that Darcy didn’t have a brother in the original!

Having the opportunity to work with other writers whose work I admired was a tremendous privilege, not to mention a learning experience! It was exhilarating to have so much creative thinking power available for story dilemmas, and the synergy was unbelievable. The characters we created working together have greater depth, and their dilemmas are more multifaceted.

We quickly adapted our writing styles to work together so there wouldn’t be any big jumps. At first we started out with one writer doing each chapter, but as the story progressed, we began to work more closely, switching back and forth by scene and discussing each detail in detail. Each of us probably spent almost as much time working on our fifth of this book that we do on a single book of our own!

But the end result is worth it. We’re all very proud of Theo Darcy – and more than a little in love with him! We hope you love him as much as we do.

Best regards, Abigail Reynolds

  2. I very much look forward to reading this book. I have already read some books from these authors and I enjoyed them. I discovered the Austenvariatons site when the novel was already in its last chapters and couldn’t have a look at it at that time. Could Theo meet Mary and give her some of his joyfulness?

  3. I can only imagine Mrs. Bennet thinking Theo would be perfect for her 2nd daughter. And, Caroline Bingley? Which brother would she rabidly pursue? What would Lydia think of such a pleasant man (even if he doesn’t wear a red coat)? So much to know!

    • The colonel has a fairly minor role, but we’ve introduced another original character, Sir Montgomery, who’s a friend of Theo’s. I think you might like him!

  6. Colonel Fitzwilliam has always been a favorite character of mine. I thought of him as Darcy’s brother. It is interesting to see how Darcy actually having a brother impacts that relationship.
    Thanks for the story!

    • Very good! Most people don’t know about the origin of Theo’s name! Sorry to disappoint, but he’s not really cut out for the church any more than Wickham is – but for completely different reasons. Theo’s talents lie in a different direction.

  7. I,too, looked for theo in P & p as I recently reread it . He has taken a life of his own and seamlessly fits into the story of Darcy
    and Elizabeth .
I greatly enjoyed the installments but look forward to reading it in book form .

Welcome back theo! You were missed!!

  9. I’m excited to read this book as it is a collaborative effort–that fascinates me! To take five authors’ ideas and create a cohesive story just seems like magic. I wish we could hear more about how they worked together, though I’m sure the chocolate had a lot to do with it!

  10. Congratulations to all the authors! Would love to see the final published book! It is an amazing accomplishment and I remember eagerly awaiting and then enjoying each new installment as they came out… delighting in the creative talents of the writers and their amazing ability to follow each other seamlessly in chapter after chapter. They have created such a fun new story with the delightful Theo, who has almost become real to me, as his handsome face shares space with other family and friends on the refrigerator. :-)

  15. I first read P&P the summer I was 13. And here decades later I am still in love with Fitzwilliam. (though since 1995 he has looked a bit like Collin Firth). I devour and prequel, sequel, what-ifs or pretty much anything to do with Mr. and Mrs .F. Darcy. Maybe Kitty can get her own Mr. Darcy?

  16. I am excessively diverted! How wonderful that you have written this book together. I have enjoyed each author’s work for some time. I anticipate each new book. Some books I own in paperback and ebooks. I have enjoyed what versions of Theo Darcy you have put online and would love to be part of the drawing. Thank you so much already for hours and hours of great company and enjoyment.

    • Good look in the draw, Sandra! There are a few changed scenes in the book version and we’ve also included all the additional scenes written at the readers’ request in the latter part of the story. Hope you enjoy it!

  17. After the heartbreaking loss of the Seahawks last night– I really need a win! And a younger Darcy brother would set me up forever– or at least ’til the sun comes out :) And if the Seahawks didn’t win, at least we’ll have #TomBradysBeautifulSkin to look at all week. Le sigh.

  18. Congratulations, ladies, on this monumental achievement! Although it was a labor of true love, I know it was also a lot of just plain hard work. Now that it’s finished, though, I’m sure Theo Darcy and his story will be delighting readers for years to come. Well done!

  19. I remember when this first started out as a group writing project online, and readers voted on how they thought the story should progress. I am anxious to see the final result! As for original characters, I’m wondering what Elizabeth’s meddling mother thought of Theo. I’m guessing she recommended him to Elizabeth over his moody brother!

  25. It is not that I like him but I would like to read how Theo deals with Mr Collins ^^

I will like to read the nove l because it seems a different twist, Darcy having a brother!!! and a brother with such a different behaviour from him!! To be honest, it sounds very strage to me!!
What I have read from Abigail Reynolds or Cassandra Grafton is really good. However, I still have to read works from the other authors.

  26. Oh, I’m certainly hoping Mrs. Bennet makes an appearance. Just imagine the flutterings and spasms to be caused by TWO rich, handsome gentlemen competing for Lizzy’s affections!

  27. I thoroughly enjoyed the reader participation in The Darcy Brothers as it was published online last year. The writing was seamless, especially when more than one of our writers collaborated in a single chapter. As many have said, it was hard, particularly at the time, to remember that Fitzwilliam DIDN’T have a younger brother.

I have a Theo key ring hanging up on display on the bookcase in my study from a giveaway at the time, and it came with some of the aforementioned Swiss chocolate from Cassandra (thanks so much for that!). The chocolate is but a dim and distant memory but Theo lives on.

The prospect of new chapters is fantastic and I’m looking forward to reading the published version in it’s entirety rather than in weekly installments.

Good luck with the launch ladies, and Theo! (Don’t give your brother too hard a time.)

  28. I have no suggesstions as I already know who is included. It was so much fun to read along as it was created and I am just as excited now for the release of it in print! Can’t wait to read it again. So happy for you ladies! Congratulations! Theo is quite the character!

    Thank you for the giveaway!

    • I asked Theo, and he tells me he cannot say, since he could not possibly know who his descendants would be unless they could somehow travel through time. But then he had to rush off to examine a giant blue item marked ‘Police Box’ which had suddenly appeared, so I couldn’t ask him any further questions. ;)

  29. I began reading The Darcy Brothers when it was first being posted in weekly chapters and really enjoyed the “back and forth” between the two brothers which sometimes bordered on real tension: Darcy being his responsible somewhat stuffy self and Theo being a bit like a younger Richard. Having a second brother must have a tremendous impact on Georgiana, too, not to mention Elizabeth! Conflicts must be on the horizon! Would very much like to read the finished product; best of luck ladies on the new release!

    • I can’t remember, June! lol!

There are new parts spread throughout the story, and we’ve tried very hard to blend everything together so it flows naturally, so I can’t even remember where they fall.

  34. I’m excited to read this book! Imagine a little brother along the lines of Wickham! Poor Fitzwilliam. I read that neither Caroline or Colonel Fitzwilliam play much of a role, but didn’t find much on Bingley. I sure hope that Darcy does have a good friend by his side!
    Can’t wait to read this!

  36. This book brings together so many fantastic Austen authors, I can not wait to read their collaboration to bring another adaptation of Pride & Prejudice to life again. Such delights in store for us Austen lovers! Will the infamous DeBourgh meddle in the Darcy brother affairs? Will the young Darcy double cross Whickam and sweep Lydia off her feet instead to vex Lizzy? Or will Bingley turn out to be the ring leader of the shameful Wichkam and young Darcy? Anticipation for what these authors have cooked up is delightful! Any wait to read! Congratulations!!
