Jane Austen fans, hold on to your bonnets. The new BBC/Masterpiece screen adaptation of Poldark will air on Masterpiece PBS on June 21st, 2015.
Based on the beloved novels by Winston Graham set in 1780’s Cornwall, many period drama fans will be familiar with the first screen adaptation by the BBC and Masterpiece from 1975-77 staring Robin Ellis (Edward Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility 1971). It was a huge hit on both sides of the pond and remains the second most popular drama series only behind the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.
This new eight part series stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as rebellious Captain Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as Demelza, a fiery young street urchin who he employs as a kitchen maid at his estate. Airing since March in the UK to critical and public acclaim, the new series sports a beautiful and talented cast and high quality production. Filled with romantic, passionate drama and swashbuckling action, this new series introduces new viewers to an unique, swoon-worthy hero that will win the respect of fans of the original and the hearts of everyone. Here is a preview for your enjoyment.

I have heard a lot about this book/movie but have neither read the book nor viewed the movie. Sounds like a wonderful summer series. Will mark my calendar.

Oh my goodness! Poldark! I can’t wait – I plan to hog the TV the nights it airs. Although, this dude has a lot to live up to in order to match or top ROBIN ELLIS as Ross Poldark!

I think you will be pleasantly surprised Jackie. I am a fan of Robin Ellis’s performance too, but Aidan Turner has the brooding, commanding presence to fill the role of Cpt. Ross Poldark perfectly.

My DVR is ready and waiting–should be such a fun way to spend the summer! I never saw the original BBC mini-series, and I am hoping to read the first book in the series before June 21.

I’m old enough to have loved the first PBS Poldark series as a young girl. I tried to watch it again a year or so ago, and it didn’t have quite the same appeal as it once did. I’ll be really interested to see a fresh take on it. Thanks for posting this.

You’re in for a treat, everyone. The first series finished here in the UK last Sunday. I remember the original series being broadcast in the seventies and although I liked Robin Ellis as Ross, he was never really a heartthrob for me. Now, Aidan Turner is just something else! He does brooding and smouldering to Olympic standard and his voice is just….well, delicious is the best word I can think of to describe it. Looks pretty good with his shirt off, too. Oh, and he can act! The actress who plays Demelza, Eleanor Tomlinson, was fantastic in her role, as well.
As with many such programmes, the Cornish tourist industry has had a big boost and will no doubt reap many benefits from the series this coming summer. The Cornish countryside looks absolutely gorgeous throughout the series, even more so whenever a certain gentleman gallops along the clifftops on his horse, or course.
