GUEST BLOG

When I first begin formulating plans for my most recent work, Haunting Mr. Darcy, I started off by considering what elements I like when reading a Jane Austen-inspired book. The number one element I came up with was bunches of Darcy and Elizabeth page time. I love to read when our hero and heroine are together a lot. From the start, this desire led me to some roadblocks. Mostly the roadblock called propriety. Historically, single men and women did not spend considerable amounts of time together alone.

While letting this problem stew in my mind, a plot bunny of lunatic proportions jumped into my mind. It solved the problem while also highlighting nicely my belief that our beloved characters, Darcy and Elizabeth were destined to be together. Jane Austen could not have conceived it any other way.

The plot that came to me was Haunting Mr. Darcy: A Spirited Courtship. In this book Elizabeth is in a horrible carriage accident just before midnight on New Year’s. At the same time in London, Darcy is struggling to forget his admiration for Elizabeth and just as he drifts off to sleep makes a wish to see her again. Elizabeth cannot die and leave the other half of her destined happily ever after alone!! So Fate jumps in and transports Elizabeth in spirit form to Darcy’s London residence. Her body is in a coma at Longbourn but her spirit is far from home. Together Darcy and Elizabeth, who fate has tethered together, cannot break this bond until they have learned to appreciate, understand and love each other. (Haha! Think of it as an otherworldly ‘get along shirt’)

This process is made difficult by our hot-stubborn hero who adamantly believes Elizabeth is just a hallucination of his overwrought mind while Elizabeth believes she is dreaming. Once Fate deems their futures secured (because finally those two quit knocking heads and fall in love) then the source of their bond is revealed. It is then possible and urgent that Darcy and Elizabeth endeavor to reunite her spirit with her slumbering body before it is too late.

The possibilities for lots of Darcy and Elizabeth page time were endless. The intimacy of being the only two able to know Elizabeth is there made for a charming spirited courtship with lots of swoon worthy moments and quite a few Jane-Austen-Would-Laugh-At-This scenes. Now many people have told me that the paranormal aspect of it made them hesitate. I wish I could tell them that it doesn’t feel paranormal at all. In fact, the first time a reviewer called it a “ghost story,” I thought “it is not a ghost story.” Although it is quite obvious that Elizabeth is a ghost for much of the book, it feels so natural to the scenes that you think nothing of it. The scenes are built around Darcy and Elizabeth regardless of their tangibility. Their bond is felt beyond their physical limitations and yet when those physical limitations are removed, the connection is pronounced.

Those same people who hesitated due to the paranormal aspect have come back to me to state how glad they were that they gave it a try. Because like I said – it isn’t really a ghost story. It is a story about a happily ever after that was supposed to happen no matter what; heedless of first impressions, regardless of personal pride and oblivious to prevailing prejudice.

  2. I will say just one thing: I wish I were Elizabeth to haunt Mr. Darcy! I bet I would discover many things I don’t know about him! :) Thanks for the giveaway.

  3. A most inventive premise for solving the proprietary ” problem”. It give us Jane addicted readers plenty of Lizzie/Darcy face time without fiddling with tradition directly.
Personally, I love the whole proprietary thing considering my daughter is starting to date and to be honest I WISH we were living in the Regency era.
However, pouring over ts treatment satisfies my Lizzie/Darcy sweettooth!, Thank you so much for this new book and of course, a giveaway is just more frosting on the cake!
    A Thousand thanks!

  4. I laughed out loud at the “otherworldly ‘get along shirt'”. I now have a mental picture of Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle wearing an oversized rugby jersey attempting mundane daily tasks :) Definitely on my ‘to-read’ lost now!

  7. I love the premise of this book. One of the genres I enjoy reading is paranormal-style fiction, another is Austenesque fiction. Combining both in the one seems to be a winner! The extracts I’ve read on a couple of other blogs make me want to read it even more.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. I am always on the search for something new and out of the box. This definitely fits the bill. Because I was working several different jobs until recently I hadn’t had the opportunity to pick this one up although it was on my list. I would LOVE to win a paperback copy!

  11. Hmmmm, more “alone’ time for Darcy and Lizzy? How delicious! It can’t get any better than that! I’m going to smile at the end of this one. Ah, who am I kidding…I smile at the end of all of them!!

  12. What intrigues me about about this kind of novels is it takes an interesting spin on my favorite novel and couple from literature. I cannot wait to read this!

  13. I think this storyline is unique and never been done before in my limited experience of reading JAFF. It certainly would not deter me because I want to spend more time with two of my favourite literary couples.

  14. I’m new to the paranormal JAFF genre, but I really like the idea of Darcy and Elizabeth being tethered together and forced to reconcile their differences. Count me in!
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  15. I would love to have the digital copy in my laptop’s library! :) While I don’t normally deviate from canon stories, Darcy and Elizabeth just have too much chemistry going to be limited in canon! :) I am ready to laugh at their spirited courtship!

    1. Sueann – you were right to wonder! I had to research that a bit. Even though Lizzy is a ghost for much of the book length, in plot time she is only in a coma for barely a week.

  16. I would squee a bit…but thats not very proper, is it. Well, then. This is one of my all time favorite books and I love a good ghost story courtship. Put them together and I’m a bit giddy in anticipation. My heart’s a flutter! Need I say more?

  18. I generally stay away from paranormal or dystopian writing but the two main characters of this book may well change my mind. It certainly would be worth reading just to see how the author has made it plausible.

  19. I’m relieved Elizabeth isn’t actually dead, and this isn’t a ‘Somewhere in Time’ type of scenario. This sounds very interesting– I don’t think I’ve seen anything out there with a similar premise. And of course, more Darcy-Lizzy time is a wonderful thing! :)

  20. Reblogged this on Let the Ink Run Free and commented:
Always Looking For a New book to read, and while I haven’t read this book yet, I’ve heard great things about it and its a ghost love story mixed with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. From the author herself, it’s all about more Elizabeth/ Darcy time, and honestly, who doesn’t want that?

From an Austenite at birth, keep Reading!

  25. The premise of this story reminds me of a Hallmark Channel movie I watched with great interest. In light of that, this sounds not only plausible but attractive and entertaining.

  26. I usually don’t read paranormal stories, they just don’t appeal to me, but I have heard nothing but good things about this one. I think I might just have to give it a try! Thanks for the giveaway!!:)

  27. I also confess to not being interested in a “paranormal story” and didn’t even read this blog when it came up in my email, but after so many responses, I finally thought I would at least read about the book. I’m so glad I did, as you have caught my interest and motivated me to give it a try, Karalynne… I too love the stories that have a lot of Darcy and Elizabeth interaction, as their conversations and attachments are so appealing! And the thought of it being a “spiritual connection” was also enticing. And finally, I loved your “Bluebells in the Morning” so will give this a try!

    1. Oh Carol I hope you will give it a try. I honestly never thought of it as supernatural or a ghost story. It is just a story about a love that is so strong and so meant to be that …. well they are soul mates in the truest sense of the term. Please find me on facebook or twitter after you read it and let me know what you think. Id love to see if it satisfied you. :) Thanks for giving it a try.

  28. I’m intrigued by the premise, which reminds me a little bit of “Just Like Heaven” except that they already know each other. It’s curious to think of how they would behave if they didn’t think the stakes were as high because it wasn’t “real”. This one is going on my TBR list.

  29. Lovely idea for bringing Darcy and Lizzy to spend more time together while overcoming the roadblock of propriery! I’m intrigued by this paranormal variation of P&P very much (and particularly by how Lizzy’s spirit returns to her body and how this haunted courtship turns into normal one):) After reading Bluebells in Mourning I understood that the author has great talent for writing tender but powerful romantic scenes, and I really look forward to reading this new book. Thank you for generous giveaway!

  31. What intregues me most about this exciting book, is the fine line between reality and dreaming and how such a well-known distinctive classic tale can be twisted into something rather different.

Austen’s Pride & Prejudice is so reconizable that it will be increadibly interesting to see what another writer will draw from the original tale and what elements remain the same.

  32. The paranormal genre is not my favorite (can’t say I like the whole vampire or zombie phenomenon that much!), but I like the idea of adapting the Elizabeth-Darcy relationship that you’ve described, that they’re spiritually connected and meant to be together! The fact that the story has to do with Elizabeth and Darcy would draw me in way more than any other generic “paranormal” type of story.

  33. Paranormal is not my cup of tea; however, I can easily imagine Elizabeth being in a coma and her spirit wanting to be with Darcy because he cannot forget her. This sounds like a wonderful variation, and I look forward to reading it. Thank you for the giveaway!

  34. It is a Great idea. I Read other P&P “what if” story, but they were paranormal. I am mot a fan of the paranormal but I think with Darcy and Elizabeth it will be wonderful.

Just purchased “bluebells …” Read and loved your first book.
Appreciate the giveaway! Good luck all!!
