2013 is a celebratory year for the legion of Jane Austen fans. It marks the bicentenary of her second published novel, Pride and Prejudice.
For two hundred years we have been enjoying her romantic, dramatic, and witty story filled with memorable characters – the Bennet sisters: angelic Jane, spirited Elizabeth, pedantic Mary, impressionable Kitty and impetuous Lydia; and the men in their lives: amiable Charles Bingley, charming Lt. George Wickham, and the proud Mr. Darcy. There is so much to praise in Jane Austen’s most popular novel which has inspired many movie adaptations, book sequels and spinoffs. In its honor, we are very pleased to announce another reading and viewing challenge for our readers:
The Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013
We had a fabulous year here in 2011 during The Sense and Sensibility Bicentenary Challenge and are pleased to offer another new challenge for Pride and Prejudice. If you have not read Jane Austen’s masterpiece (or would like to revisit it in honor of its special anniversary), seen all of the movies, or read all of the sequels and spinoffs, this is the year to join the challenge along with other Janeites, historical fiction, Regency romance, and period drama movie lovers.
Challenge Details
Time-line: The Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013 runs January 1, through December 31, 2013.
Levels of participation: Neophyte: 1 – 4 selections, Disciple: 5 – 8 selections, Aficionada: 9 – 12 selections.
Enrollment: Sign up’s are open until July 1, 2013. First, select your level of participation. Second, copy the Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013 graphic and include it in your blog post detailing the novels or movies that you commit to reading and watching in 2013. Third, leave a comment linking back to your blog post in the comments of this announcement post. If you do not have a blog you can still participate. Just leave your commitment to the challenge in the comments below.
Check Back Monthly: The Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge 2013 officially begins on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 with my review of the Naxos Audiobooks edition of Pride and Prejudice, read by Emilia Fox. Check back on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for my next review in the challenge.
Your Participation: Once the challenge starts, leave a comment in my monthly post including the book, movie, television, or web series that you finished and a link to your blog review. If you do not have a blog, just leave a comment in the monthly post about what you did read or view with a brief reaction or remark. It’s that easy. (To clarify, the post you are reading right now if the announcement and sign-up post for the challenge. Leave your reviews in future monthly posts as the year progresses.)
Resources: Since there are literally hundreds of Pride and Prejudice prequels, sequels, re-tellings, variations, mysteries and paranormal novels – both historical and contemporary – now in print or digital format, and many film adaptations to choose from on DVD or online, I will not begin to list all the possible choices that you could select for this challenge. Many are available for purchase through online book and DVD retailers. Some of the movies can also be rented and viewed on your own tablet, computer or television. Your local library is also an excellent resource.
My Choices: I have decided to start off the challenge by honoring the origins of our challenge by listening to an audio book of Pride and Prejudice, and then revisit or discover many early and classic sequels that I read many years ago, or have been on my TBR list for years. We will end the year with a TBA novel inspired by Pride and Prejudice that is new this year. Here is my list of my 12 selections:
My Reading & Viewing Schedule:
- Wed Jan 09 – Pride and Prejudice (Naxos Audiobooks), by Jane Austen, read by Emilia Fox (2005)
- Wed Feb 13 – Celebrating Pride and Prejudice: 200 Years of Jane Austen’s Masterpiece, by Susannah Fullerton
- Wed Mar 13 – Pemberley, or Pride and Prejudice Continued, by Emma Tennant (1993)
- Wed Apr 10 – Mr. Darcy’s Diary, by Amanda Grange (2006)
- Wed May 08 – Pride and Prejudice BBC/PBS miniseries (1980)
- Wed Jun 12 – Presumption: An Entertainment: A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice, by Julia Barrett (1995)
- Wed Jul 10 – Pride and Prejudice A&E/BBC miniseries (1995)
- Wed Aug 14 – Mr. Darcy’s Diary (audiobook), by Maya Slater, read by David Rintoul (2008)
- Wed Sep 11 – Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife, by Linda Berdoll (2004)
- Wed Oct 09 – Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy: The Last Man in the World (A Pride and Prejudice Variation), by Abigail Reynolds (2010)
- Wed Nov 13 – Pride & Prejudice Universal Studios movie (2005)
- Wed Dec 11 – Undressing Mr. Darcy, by Karen Doornebos (2013)
I hope you can join us. It shall be a wonderful year reading Pride and Prejudice, and visiting all of its varied offshoots.
Cheers,
Laurel Ann

I’m joining as an Aficionada as this is my all-time favorite book ever! My husband and I ended 2012 by watching the 1995 BBC 6-hour P&P, and have loved listening to two different audio-books and look forward to hearing the one you indicated, read by Emillia Fox. Is she the actor who portrays Darcy’s sister, Georgiana, in the above movie? I’ll decide on my full list later, but will begin with “Celebrating 200 years of Jane Austen”, and will include a re-reading of an annotated version of the novel. Looking forward to this immensely!

Alright, I am so excited about this! I don’t have a blog, but I’ll post my responses here and on Goodreads. I’ll commit to Aficionada–excited to read some new Austen-related material! But I’m not a huge fan of “sequels” to Austen’s work–does anybody have other P&P-related suggestions for me?
LikeLike
Hi Hannah, welcome to the challenge. I would start with P&P, then watch a few of the movie adaptation. There are also online games, board games, web series like Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I am sure others can recommend spinoffs too. Can I tempt you to read Mr. Darcy’s Diary with me? It is a classic in the sequels genre and very well written. It might surprise you!
LikeLike
I read the original recently, so I think I’ll skip that step, but I’ve already started on the movie adaptations and the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, because I wanted to jump right in and go. I will go to the library and see if they have Mr. Darcy’s Diary. Might as well give it a try, for the sake of trying new things, right? I’m thinking I might try some different things as well, like Pride & Prejudice and Zombies…and maybe Death Comes to Pemberley, which sounds exciting. I’m going to try reviving my blog, as well, so I’ll be posting there, and hopefully the link works here so you’ll have it. :) Thanks for your encouragement!

I feel the same way about Austen sequels, etc. I’ve figured out that I can appreciate loosely-based parodies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Clueless, etc.), but, when a book is presented as one that could have been written by Austen, I tend to have expectations that are waaayyyy too high and am disappointed. I am no writer, but it must be near impossible to imitate Austen’s perception, pacing, wit, and style. That’s why Austen’s books are still so loved 200 years after being written. (That said, I may still try Mr. Darcy’s Diary since Lauren and others have highly recommended it.)
Here’s my preliminary list (comment above).
https://austenprose.com/2012/12/31/the-pride-and-prejudice-bicentenary-challenge-2013/#comment-33273

I like the loosely-based parodies, too, although not Bridget Jones’ Diary as much. And Clueless, I think, is more a parody of Emma than of Pride and Prejudice–it’s a fun one.

The challenge is delightfully accepted at the afficionada level; although, it creates two more challenges. First, I’m on a remote island in the South Pacific where specific books are not readily available. Secondly, It will be a challenge to stretch the reading out to nine or ten months (allowing for video watching for two or three months of the year). This situation calls for an urgent shipment of P&P sequels from family and friends in the US and elsewhere!
I don’t blog; so, will be checking in here.
I will begin the challenge by reading the Pamela Aiden “Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman” trilogy.
Book 1, An Assembly Such As This
Book 2, Duty and Desire
Book 3, These Three Remain
4. Pride and Prejudice ~ Jane Austen
5. The Pemberley Chronicles: Mr. Darcy’s Daughter ~ Rebecca Ann Collins
6. The Pemberley Chronicles: My Cousin Caroline ~ Rebecca Ann Collins
The schedule will be updated as tomes arrive. There will most certainly be a viewing (one of several) of the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and – depending on the need – the Knightley/McFadden film version of Pride and Prejudice.
Thank you for the assignment!

Disciple for me, i believe (Only because i’m getting married this year, thus quite distracted). Though I refuse to watch (ever again) the Kiera Knightly version of P&P…watching her hack away trying to portray one of the most complex characters ever written (Eliza Bennett) is just …well…sacrilidge. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle are the only Elizabeth & Darcy I recognize. I will take the following
#1. Pride and Prejudice (Naxos Audiobooks)
#2. Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife
#3. Pride and Prejudice A&E/BBC miniseries
#4: Presumption: An Entertainment: A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice
#5: Mrs. Darcy’s Dilemma

#1 Entry for the 2013 Pride and Prejudice 200th Anniversary Challenge
I carefully apportioned the pages in this rereading of Pride and Prejudice, so I would complete them on the anniversary date of the publication. As I look back, it is difficult to remember that I have read this – my favorite Jane Austen novel – nearly 50 times since my 13th birthday when I was first given it by my grandmother. The wonderful characters, the intriguing plot, the elegant prose, the biting wit, the perfect irony – every element has only grown better and richer with each reading.
It has been arguably the most influential novel in the history of English literature, from Mrs. Gaskell’s North and South to half of all the current rom-com movies and TV series. Boy and girl meet, they hate each other and then they finally fall in love. While most popular adaptions of this story line may not have the psychological subtlety or intricacy of Jane Austen’s original novel, there is usually an element of maturing and self-knowledge even in the most cotton-candy plots, which is part of the legacy of Jane Austen.
I will always love the independence of Elizabeth, admire the gentleness of Jane, enjoy the humor of Mr. Bennet, laugh at Mr. Collins, appreciate the kindness of the Gardiners, fantasize about Mr. Darcy and celebrate when “Happy for all her maternal instincts was the day on which Mrs. Bennet got rid of her two most deserving daughters.”

#2 Entry for the 2013 Pride & Prejudice Anniversary Challenge
Although Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) was not on my original list, I viewed it with a friend who had never seen the film. We both enjoyed it a great deal and, of course, loved the casting of
Colin Firth as Mark Darcy. Renee
Zellweger was very likeable as Bridget. Certainly she was not Elizabeth Bennet, but she was warm and witty and had grown by the end and turned down the Wickamesque Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) in favor of her Mr. Darcy. The screenplay by Andrew Davies, who did the 1995 version, was thoroughly charming. I
was glad to see it again so many years later.

Well I finally have my year reading planned out. I decided that I wasn’t going to repeat anything, meaning I can’t reread or rewatch anything I have already seen (except for the original P&P by Jane Austen), which unfortunately cuts out my favorite movies, the A&E version of P&P and Lost in Austen. Realistically, I will probably still watch those, but it couldn’t count toward my challenge. So here’s my year of reading.
January: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
February: Mr. Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange
March: An Arranged Marriage by Jan Hahn
April: Celebrating Pride and Prejudice: 200 Years of Jane Austen’s Masterpiece by Susannah Fullerton
May: The Unexpected Miss Bennet by Patrice Sarath
June: Only Mr. Darcy Will Do by Kara Louise
July: 1932 by Karen Cox
August: Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James
September: Becoming Jane Austen by Jon Spence (I know this isn’t really a P&P version, but it’s a book I have been meaning to read for a while so I decided to throw it in there.)
October: Austenland by Shannon Hale
November: The Cumberland Plateau: A Pride and Prejudice Modern Sequel by M.K. Baxley
December: An Assembly Such as This by Pamela Aidan (I chose this one to be read last so that if I liked it, I could follow it with the following books in the series.)
I highly suspect that some of these books I’ll be able to read faster than a month, so I might hit more than 12, but we’ll see. Here’s to a great year!

Too bad I already have a post on my three favorites (the original book, the DVD with Colin Firth and the Aidan trilogy) at http://homecomingbook.wordpress.com/2012/04/17/pride-and-prejudice-different-points-of-view-ian1/ but I have several others and your list suggests some to get. My blog is http://homecomingbook.wordpress.com and I’ll probably put reviews on Tuesdays. My list would include several I’ll try to get in a post next Tuesday (I’m preparing for a free day on Amazon for Horse Power right now), but I’m sure I’ll see reviews of others I’ll add. In fact I’ve already noted Mr. Darcy’s Diary and some DVD’s I don’t have.

Laurel Ann,
I am very late, but here we go:
Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary on my blog, Jane Austen em Português, (written in Brazilian Portuguese).
The events will be published all year long.
1) Comparative Reading
Brazil and Portugal have the same language and yet with many differences. To celebrate the Pride and Prejudice Bicentenary, I Raquel Sallaberry Brião (Brazil) and Cátia Pereira (Portugal) will make a comparative reading of two translations: of Lucio Cardoso (Brazilian Portuguese) and Nuno Castro (Portuguese from Portugal), both titled” Orgulho e preconceito”.
2) Guest readers articles
3) Interviews with Janeites
4) Pride and Prejudice Movies Garments

Just discovered blog and challenge. I’m writing my PhD thesis on Intimacy in Jane Austen’s six canonical novels so I don’t need a lot of excuses to read her…But a Pride and Prejudice challenge is just too much fun to miss!! Please sign me up as Aficionada (dissertation permitting). I think I’ll do this from my Goodreads account but not sure yet. For now, here is my personal challenge starting in February (is that allowed?):
February: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (for the hundredth time)
March: Sharon Maguire’s The Diary of Bridget Jones (movie)
April: Nancy Butler and Hugo Petrus’s Pride and Prejudice (Marvel’s comic book)
May: P. D. James’s Death Comes to Pemberley
June: Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice
July: Shannon Hale’s Austenland (+ Jerusha Hess’s film)
August: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Naxos audiobook read by Emilia Fox)
September: Susanna Fullerton’s Celebrating Pride and Prejudice: 200 years of Jane Austen’s Masterpiece
October: Laurel Ann Natress’s Jane Austen Made Me Do It
November: Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
December: Simon Langton’s Pride and Prejudice (BBC mini-series)
Starting right now!! Have a fun Pride and Prejudice year, everyone!
And thank you so much, Laurel Ann, for organizing :)

I would love to join, but wondered if it is necessary to list what I will be reading and watching ahead of time? I absolutely don’t have a plan yet, but could do an update as my list grows. Does that work?
My goal would be Disciple, I think my time is too packed to commit to more than that. I think I will use my Goodreads account, or else my blog. Maybe it could use a resurrection from general neglect!
My daughter fell in love with Pride and Prejudice last year and has read it likely a dozen times in less than a year. We were already planning on celebrating this year with a costumed party, this can be a fun addition!

OK, I’m already committed to the Regency challenge, but here goes nothing! Count me in and I’ll go for aficionado here, as well, hoping to find some of my selections at our local library. My selections are:
1. A reread of Pride and Prejudice,
2. Mrs. Darcy’s Dillemma by Diane Birchall
3. The Diary of Henry Fitzwilliam Darcy by Marjorie Fassman
4. The Pemberly Chronicles by Rebecca Ann Collins
5., Letters from Pemberly by June Dawkins
6. Mr. Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange
7. Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife by Linda Bardoll
8. Georgianna Darcy’s Diary by Anna Elliott
9. Pemberly to Waterloo by Anna Elliott
10,. Charlotte Collins by Jennifer Becton
11. Austenland by Shannon Hale (time travel? a new reading experience for me)
12. Caroline Bingley by Jennifer Becton
I also hope to get the 1995 DVD’s of P&P from my library. And since I already own the last 5 listed (on my Kindle) I will definitely not be reading my selections in the order shown. Hope that doesn’t matter. May I change this list later on if I find some of these difficult to locate?

I want to clarify again to all of the participants that this is the sign-up post for the challenge. Leave your commitment level and selections in the comments here.
In this post is a list of dates each month that I will be posting my monthly reviews. As the year progresses you leave a comment in each monthly post about your selection with a link to your review or if you do not have a blog, leave your review in the monthly comments. Please don’t leave your monthly comments and links here.
I have written to many of you personally about the process to help those who are lost, but I encourage you to read the instructions above and ask questions if you do not understand before posting all of your monthly reviews here.
Unfortunately, since this is such a large group I do not have the time and patience to write to all of you personally when you mis-post something, so I am giving everyone fair warning to read the instructions above and follow them. Any future reviews posted in this thread will be deleted with my apologies.

Challenge entry # 4 =The Three Colonels ( Caldwell) I found this rather fun as a revisit to P&P and S&S characters. The transformation of Caroline Bingley as a caring Lady Buford and Lady Catherine’s come-uppence were particularly enjoyable.
Challenge entry # 5 ( it helps to have fractured my hand and reading being one of the few things to do easily!) A World Without Darcy (Carlson) This was short but sweet. It reminded me of It’s A Wonderful Life with Darcy looking at his closest friends life without him. I particularly found Georgiana’s story heartbreaking.
Challenge entry # 6 Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen (O’Rourke) Another fun read…set in modern times USA and UK. I don’t want to spoil the story but the idea that Jane based Darcy on a modern day Darcy was an interesting twist. As much as Eliza and Darcy were obviously destined to be a couple it was sad to see Jane left behind knowing she would remain alone.

I am in! I just started reading Pride & Prejudice this month, and I admit, I am no Austen fan, but I really wanted to know what all this Mr. Darcy fuss is about.
So far enjoying the book, though as my first incursion into Austen’s writing I have found it a little demanding at times, but I’m not quitting.
I’ll participate on Disciple Level, still have no plan but it will include a lot of movies since getting books in the original languages, or simply, not-so-classic international literature is hard in my country. So it will be:
BOOKS:
– Pride & Prejudice, by Jane Austen (obviously)
– any Austen biography I can find
– Bridget Jones’s Diary, by Helen Fielding (if I can find it)
MOVIES:
– Pride & Prejudice BBC/PBS miniseries (1980)
– Pride & Prejudice A&E/BBC miniseries (1995)
– Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
– Bride & Prejudice (2004)
– Pride & Prejudice (2005)
– Lost in Austen (2008)

I thought I had entered this back in January but after checking all of the above comments, it appears that I did not. I’m in for the highest commitment, which, I believe is called aficionado. I have already read some of the books and will start watching the film versions, my favorite being the 1995 version. It was the one I was introduced to Jane Austen by a good friend while I was very sick. Colin Firth still makes me swoon…..

I know I am late to the game but I would really like to join the challenge. Since I am such a Jane junky I will go Aficionada: 9 – 12 selections. I do not have a blog so I will post here. I have some that I have completed this month.
1) Watched P&P 2005 movie
Pros- Production was beautifully done; Music was well done as well and I actually thought Matthew Macfadyen was a decent Darcy.
Cons- Don’t think Keira Knightly was a good fit for Lizzy; The house used as Longbourne was too run down and in need of repairs; I think they strayed too far from the novel, I know it is only a 2 hour movie so time was a big issue but really how much time would it have cost to keep Mr. & Mrs. Hurst and Georgiana Darcy (as played by Tamzin Merchant) was way to forward. The book stressed how shy and awkward she was, especially around strangers.
That said, I own it on DVD, have it saved to my DVR and have a copy on my laptop so I watch it quite often.
2) Read the second book in Carrie Bebris’ series Mr. & Mrs. Darcy Mystery : Suspense and Sensibility (Or, First Impressions Revisited)
Pros- It is well written and I like the concept of Lizzy & Darcy meeting and interacting with characters of other JA novels.
Cons- I really didn’t care for the supernatural element used in this book. Feels too much like Oscar Wildes novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” . A simple ghost story would have worked so much better as a supernatural element.
I will read the rest of the series, I just hope she tones down the supernatural parts. Gave it 3 stars on Goodreads.
3) Read Amanda Granges book Mr. Darcy’s Diary which is the first book in her Jane Austen Heroes series.
Pros- Totally loved this book. It is a book I am happy I bought and will reread it again and again.
Cons- The book ended too soon.
Gave it 5 stars on Goodreads.

I’m not sure if I should wait till the monthly posting or if I should just post as I finish. Please let me know.
For now I have finished Pride & Prejudice- BBC/PBS mini-series (1980). It was my first time. I enjoyed this version. The changes are not as big as the ones in the 2005 movie but since I’ve seen the movie sooo many times I found myself comparing them. Even though it was difficult to fall in love with this Mr. Darcy, my love for the character accepted him. Elizabeth was played well but I found myself really liking the way Sabina Franklyn played Jane Bennet. Lady Catherine de Bourgh was played by Judy Parfitt which was the only actress I recognized and, of course, played her part well. I would watch it again and probably not compare it as much now that I know what it’s like.
I did like Mr. Darcy’s smile when he found out Elizabeth loved him too. Also how Jane, being older, was more correct about everyone’s character than Elizabeth was. I laughed with Mr. Collins’ dancing. :)
