A Preview of Dreaming of Mr. Darcy & Guest Blog with Author Victoria Connelly

Dreaming of Mr. Darcy, by Victoria Connelly (2012)Happy New Year everyone! What better way to start the new year than with a new Austen-inspired novel by Victoria Connelly?

Dreaming of Mr. Darcy, her second novel in her Austen Addicts series, launches today by Sourcebooks. We loved the first in the series, A Weekend with Mr. Darcy, and are so pleased that Victoria has stopped by today to chat with us about her new contemporary novel set in serious Austen territory – Lyme Regis – where part of the plot of Persuasion is set.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Fledging illustrator and Darcy fanatic Kay Ashton settles in the seaside town of Lyme to finish her book, The Illustrated Darcy, when a film company arrives to make a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Kay is soon falling for the handsome bad boy actor playing Captain Wentworth, but it’s the quiet screenwriter Adam Craig who has more in common with her beloved Mr. Darcy. Though still healing from a broken heart, Adam finds himself unexpectedly in love with Kay. But it will take more than good intentions to convince her that her real happy ending is with him.

GUEST BLOG

When I first came up with the idea of a trilogy about Jane Austen addicts – with each book set in an Austen location – I was particularly excited about using the setting of Lyme Regis for the second book, Dreaming of Mr. Darcy (titled The Perfect Hero in the UK).  I love Dorset and have visited Lyme Regis many times and, of course, you can’t set a book in Lyme without referencing Persuasion if you’re a Jane Austen fan so I thought it would be enormous fun to set the book around the shooting of a new film version of Jane Austen’s final book.

In Persuasion, Jane Austen talks about how beautiful the countryside around Lyme Regis is and I wanted to include this in my novel too. I was lucky enough to spend time in Lyme Regis whilst writing the book and this was invaluable to me as a way of getting the details right and I found a gorgeous old manor house in the Marshwood Vale which stood in for Sir Walter’s home in the film adaptation.

I love writing in situ if I can and I spent a very cold day on a windswept beach at Charmouth writing the scene where my heroine, Kay Ashton, goes fossil-hunting with shy screenwriter hero, Adam Craig.  I’ll never forget how numb my fingers were but I was determined to get my page filled!

I also walked along the famous Cobb and found the steps from which Louisa Musgrove would have leapt.

I really enjoyed writing Kay’s story.  She’s a little like Jane Austen’s Emma Woodhouse the heroine of Emma because she’s a terrible match-maker, and she’s a bit like Catherine Morland, the heroine of Northanger Abbey too because she’s a romantic and finds it easy to get carried away.  She’s an Austen addict extraordinaire and loves painting and is working on her first book – The Illustrated Darcy – when we first meet her.

There are two heroes in Dreaming of Mr. Darcy.  I knew the actor playing Captain Wentworth in the movie version being filmed – Oli Wade Owen – would be dashing and would sweep Kay off her feet but there is also the quietly-spoken Adam, whom Kay just doesn’t seem to notice at first because she’s busy match-making him to Gemma – the actress playing Anne Elliot.

One of my favourite characters in the book is Adam’s outspoken grandmother, Nana Craig.  She has a love of colour and a hatred of the acting profession since her husband ran off with an actress several decades ago.  Nana Craig was a lot of fun to write and I love the scene where Oli ends up half-naked in her front room (but I’m not going to give too much away here!)

I have had such fun writing my Austen addicts’ trilogy and I hope you all enjoy the second part, Dreaming of Mr. Darcy.

  1. I am interested in reading more about Lyme Regis because Austen made both the location and its inhabitants so very appealing and also it is where Captain Wentworth started to realize he was still in love with Anne Elliot.

  2. Persuasion is one of those books that you can pick up and read anytime, anywhere. I used to keep a small version in my pocketbook, but now it is on my phone and ready to read. I’d be happy to try a modern version of “Persuasion” as I love reading “P & P” sequels. I love Captain Wentworth and his well worded letter to Anne.

  3. Well, I must admit that somehow I missed Victoria’s first book in this trilogy. But no matter, I now have two books to look forward to in the New Year!

Persuasion is my favorite Austen novel, so any book inspired by it is intriguing! Plus, I will really enjoy reading about the surroundings. Someday I’ll make it there!!

Best wishes, Victoria, with your new novel!

  5. Persuasion was my least favorite of her books to be honest so I love to read inspired books because it gives me an opportunity to read the story in a new light that perhaps will appeal to me more. Thanks for the giveaway and Happy New Year!

  9. This book sounds good with its setting in Lyme and its references to ‘Persuasion’. I have awaited it eagerly because I loved the first book ‘Weekend with Darcy’.

As to what I like about Persuasion, it is the mature couple getting a second chance knowing all the barriers they had to happiness.

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity and for the interview post!

  10. True confession: I like modern retellings of Persuasion SO MUCH BETTER than Jane’s original. (I know, I’m the oddball, haha :) ), so I am definitely looking forward to reading this one :)

I think Edward & Elinor need to be revisited next!

    1. Edward and Elinor have been visited in a book I read that recently came out. I wish I could tell you the name of it but check out amazon.

  11. I like the theme of not giving up on love in Persuasion. I think it’s a contemporary theme as well and that’s what intrigues me about modern reworkings of Persuasion. I am sure Jane Austen would find it amusing that people would rework her stories for modern audiences. :) Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book; would love to read it!

  13. I love how deep and varied the rabbit hole of Austen addiction is. I cannot seem to get enough, and even when I’m not entirely pleased with how things turn out I still find myself wanting to read more. I love how Jane Austen’s themes transcend time. The issues addressed in the relationships of Persuasion are just as relevant today as they were when written, so how could I not be interested in a contemporary Persuasion inspired novel?

  15. I read the 1st book and can’t wait until I can get my mitts on this one! Persuasion was low on my list of favorite Austen titles until I read it again in the last year or so. It is now only 2nd to Pride and Prejudice which I believe shall never be surpassed. Bringing Austen’s titles into modern times is great fun. Thanks for the post!

  16. Persuasion is my favorite Austen work. Pride and Prejudice is almost tied for first. I loved Victoria’s A Weekend With Mr. Darcy. This new release I’m sure will be just excellent and I’d love to read it as well. I think it’s intriguing because it’s one of the novels with the fewest sequels, prequels, adaptations or modern versions. However, more and more have been coming out the past couple of years. I’m sure it will reach a wider audience that way. More people usually like emma – so I’d say if Victoria does someone from Northanger Abbey or Mansfield Park it should be a hit as well because those are very rare also.

  17. I just love it when authors write about Persuasion! Persuasion & its characters are not written about as much as P&P. As a result, I tend to find these refreshing.
I enjoyed A Weekend with Mr. Darcy and am looking forward to reading the second book in your series! Thank you so much for the giveaway!

  19. Persuasion is one of my top favorites of Austen’s books. I just loved the descriptions of the countryside & of Lyme… would love to go there someday & see the Cobb! I am a huge fan of the “side stories” for P&P, and am so glad to see a new trilogy relating to Persuasion! I am definitely putting this trilogy on my “to read” list!! ;) Thanks so much for the giveaway, and I wish you a wonderful & very Happy New Year :)

  20. I think with so many retellings of the other novels it’s good to have one based on Persuasion.

I would love one on Henry Tilney or Colonel Brandon. I am always interested in what is going on in the men’s heads.

  21. I’ve never read a modern Persuasion-style novel and I’m curious to see how the character’s restraint in the original is translated into a modern setting. I really enjoyed A Weekend with Mr. Darcy so I would definitely give Dreaming of Mr. Darcy a try. Thanks for hosting a giveaway!

  24. Based on PERSUASION, but with Mr. D in the title! This must be the best of two worlds! Those two novels are my favorites of Jane’s work and I cannot decide which of them holds first place. I look forward to reading your version.

  25. I love that Persuasion is semi-autobiographical and very comparable to the later period of Jane Austen’s writing.

  26. Persuasion is such a wonderful story. Anne and Fredrick may be my favorite paring after Lizzy and Fitzwilliam. I find myself getting more & more aggravated for Anne when ever her family is around.

While there isn’t an Austen novel I don’t adore, I would so love someone to show MIss Fanny Price a bit more love. Someone do something with Mansfield Park, please.

  27. This sounds like a great story. I like that it’s based on Persuasion but still has bits of Darcy in it! The idea of “The Illustrated Darcy” is great! I wish I could draw or paint to capture my vision of Austen’s characters. I’m always interested in how authors modernize the storyline, and keep it believable and faithful to the original.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. I think is because we see loads of Pride & Prejudice inspired books, and not so much of Persuasion. It’s a really good story because the protagonist, Anne learns to think without being persuaded by others and she’s someone calm and collected and is always level-headed. That makes her a great role model to young girls!

I think maybe a story about Henry Tilney next? :)

    Thanks for the giveaway!
